Itchy Feet.

Hello! :-)

I've been rather busy with work lately - which is good, no? - but my feet have been itching to travel. Real bad, so bad I am beginning to get fidgety on weekends.

It feels like I've been grounded or something, as I have not travelled at all since early March. But I keep reminding myself that I need to have the patience. The closest thing to 'travel' that I'm gonna be in the next few months is getting my passport renewed next month. Grrrr.

Anyway, good things come to those who wait. For the time being I'll get my happyness from books, friends, and hopefully, a 21K medal sometime next week! And a lot of Butterflies in my stomach!!

Here's to adventure! Yours and mine :)

May all your travels be happy and safe.

Any Way The Wind Blows.

Some time back, chatting with a friend about travelling, I realised that not everyone wants to go to certain destinations.

What I mean is, each person feels differently about where they want to go.

For myself, I don't feel the attraction (yet) to go to places like China, Japan, Korea, amongst others. Africa? Maybe just Egypt and Morocco. I'm not saying no, it's just that there are places which are out of my current Top Ten list.

The friend did not feel the desire to go to India. And my initial duh reaction was, how can you not want go to India? Instead, he wants to do New Zealand. And I go, oh okay, I don't feel like going to New Zealand. Not yet, at least for now. So I understand what it means when you don't feel the 'pull-factor'.

If I had all the resources - time and moolah - right now, I'd want to do Spain, Turkey, Italy, Morocco and some other old places.

Then again, I might change my mind in the future, so don't hold me ransom over this post :)

I still want to go to New Zealand, okay. One day.

I Know What I Did ... This Summer?

Hello :)

Lack of updates I know, as I've been staying put at home since returning from my Sibu weekend. No travelling plans till October so I've been spending time falling back into routine and also kicked off some personal projects that have been on my list for a long time.

So bear with me while I share with you my non-travel stories ya?

I've made the kitchen my second territory a lot more often now. Cooking is fun, especially when you don't go by the rules :) Two of my attempts which I remembered to take pictures of before I devoured them:

Green Papaya Salad, Som Tam.

Noodles soup deluxe.

Books - I tried reading new authors like Orhan Pamuk and Jonathan Safran Foer. And got my second Khaled Hosseini (wonderful writer!)

I had a Paul for years and didn't remember until after the World Cup!

Currently reading this. Eye-opening facts about our food.
In short : Eat Food. Not Much. Mostly Plants.

This is for later.

From the library.

Running/walking has taken a backseat in this prevailing bad weather (a convenient excuse, really) but I try to make it up by doing a lot more house chores and lifting my puny colourful dumbells. My motto - better than nothing :P

Recently we had the AirAsia Sale, MATTA fair here in KK as well as the various MAS promos. I just bought one ticket for next year, since in my case I really cannot take the risk of purchasing tickets on a whim anymore. I hope you guys got some good deals! And the ticket I bought hopefully will bring me to :

Resources from my local library.

Finally tried my green tea from Lao. Very fragrant.

My first taste of goat's milk; recommended for those who are lactose-intolerant. It works! So I can probably get my calcium intake from this.

And, this weekend I'll be busy with my new little project, codenamed "Tick" :)

Y'all have an awesome weekend ahead now ! :)

Mile High Crosswords

This is my must-do when aboard AirAsia.

After completing it I sign off, doodle something and give myself a star :)

(Oh. By the way, I still can't finish any sudoku. At best so far I'm usually stuck with the last two boxes)

Interesting Things #99

Look at No. 9.

Does that mean it's allowed if one asks for permission?

Oh, the fixation with No. 9 is because of this man.

And I just realised, today's the 9th!

Happiness Is ...

A way of travel, eh? I thought this poster was kinda cute.

Other than travelling by airplane, buses, boats and trains, I'd like to experience a hot-air balloon ride one day, even if it's just a short distance away.

Maybe cycle to somewhere too; not too far though since I might end up cramping and fainting half-way. And how about on horseback, or on a camel? Or in an RV? We don't have them here though.

Anyway, Happy Weekend everyone, it's our 'last' holiday weekend till April; enjoy!

Peso-less in Manila

My recent trip to the Philippines was not without its series of little unfortunate events.

My biggest mistake was that I failed to check that I brought my pesos with me. Duh duh duh, and I can kick myself for this! I confidently packed everything I needed (or so I thought) and even sorted out the currency the night before.

The thing is, for travelling I use a separate purse for the foreign currency as I prefer not to mess up my daily purse. I must have dropped the purse in my room in midst of packing my backpack *mental note to self : clear mess next time*

I only realised that I didn't have all my pesos when I arrived in Pureza station, en route to GV Florida bus terminal in Sampaloc. I wanted to kick myself : how could I not have realised this after buying the bus ticket from Clark, some things from Watson's and dinner as well?

I asked around and was told that the nearest money changer was at a mall 10-15 minutes away, SM something. Braved myself to hail a jeepney (fastest way apparently) only to reach there after it just closed at 8 pm. *gawd* ATM machines were aplenty but I've never used ATMs out of the country before and didn't think it was a good idea anyway. Went around asking some more, still futile.

I decided that I should just head on to the bus terminal and worry about it later. Maybe there are money changers in Banaue. Back in Pureza I asked the tricycle guy if he knows any money changer. In halting English he mentioned the name of a place (Sunshine something?) and said they might still be open till 9 pm or so. He offered to cycle me there and then onwards to the bus station for Php 100. I said I'll pay him that only if I get to change my money and reach the bus station on time (so mean, kan?)Italic So the guy cycled away real fast and within 15 minutes I got my pesos (yeay! not so great rate though, I didn't care much anymore) and another 15 minutes later I was at the bus terminal. Thanked the guy and gave him a tip for his A+ efforts.

Anyway, the moral of the story is, please learn from my mistake and double-check your purses before you leave, ya?

On a lighter note, how was your Valentine? I had this man wish me in Banaue :

No. Just kidding. But the poster banner is scary, no?

Travel and Minor Heartaches

Travelling isn't always smooth sailing all the time. Unless you're really lucky.

After a while, having had my share of bad and unexpected experiences, somehow for me some have become almost ... expected. Let's see:

Flight delays - usually KUL-BKI
Made famous by Air Asia. Haha. Yes, it hasn't really happened that frequently to me, so far the retimes and delays have not affected my plans that much (touch wood!). Expect it, then one won't be too upset.

And there was one time my delayed flight landed really late at LCCT, and I reached Sentral too late (just minutes before midnight) to catch the last monorail service. I had no choice but to get a taxi to Bukit Bintang; getting one which wanted to go there on a Saturday night was already a challenge, and after much negotiation I agreed on a cut-throat RM20.00. Because he said he likes us Sabahans and Sarawakians because we are so polite and friendly and he has a Sarawakian girlfriend. Er, okay.

The Morning After ... Sleeping at the Airport
Sore shoulders and tired eyes and grogginess due to lack of sleep. Well, at least this will result in me falling fast asleep during the flight. Will not hesitate to do it again when necessary though.

Bus ride from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap
The bus driver failed to inform us that it was not stopping at the bus terminal at Wat Bo area as we thought we would, but at its 'branch office' located after the airport road. Had to shell out USD2 for a tuk-tuk back into town. Then my pre-arranged driver was a no-show too. Double blow.

Excess Luggage
On three occasions, I had to get my bag to be checked in on the return flight home as it was overweight for hand luggage. Lesson : stop shopping! Or at least, plan ahead and pay for luggage allowances online as it'll save me 50%.

LAGS check
My half bottle of sunblock made it through in my hand luggage from KUL-REP, but not on the return flight because it was 125 ml. I thought it was 100 ml. Oh, half-full bottled water, which I always forget.

Accommodation
There were occasions when the condition and appearance of the rooms were slightly below my expectations. Nothing major though, which is why most of the time I prefer to book just one night first and scour around for other places for following nights.

Currency
I ran out of the rupiahs in Bandung and had to endure driving around in the weekend traffic jam madness to locate a money-changer that was still open at night. Crazy. Massive massive headache. Never again.

Actually they aren't too bad, I cannot remember anything that was really major. For every heartache there's probably ten or more good things that made me smile. Mostly from the kindness of strangers, and things that seem to quietly fall into place to make your day better.
One day I think I'll write about them too :)

Some days this is how I feel.

If the Fates Allow

The other night a carolling group came to the house to sing Xmas Carols.

I was amused, because they only sang one traditional carol, and the rest was a medley of modern ones, fashioned after ABBA songs! Yes, I remember there was Mamma Mia and Super Trooper (?) as well as that song made famous in Sister Act.

I like traditional carols and songs, my firm favourites being O Holy Night and Winter Wonderland, and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. This last one was performed by Colbie and Jason last night on Letterman :)

By the way, Last Christmas by Wham does not count as an Xmas song.

How About ....A Little Kindness?

I stumbled upon this little charity project, dubbed ProjectBack2School recently.

Read more about it here, here, and here, in Arteo's blog. All for a very good cause, so if you're thinking of doing some charity this festive season, you may want to consider this.

The bag will be available at Starbucks Warisan Square and Centre Point, hopefully the dates can be extended. I think he still needs more elves :).

Yeah, let's try a little kindness!

And This Is The Part Where You Pretend To Add Value

Because it's Christmas time (lame excuse, I know) and because there's no travelling story (yet!) from me, I thought I'd write about my other love - apart from travels and Jason - which is, books!

Just done reading this. Couldn't help but buy it the other day. Gladwell, the pop sociologist, really makes you think. Blink is still my favourite book from him.

Want List - I sat in the bookstore and read five chapters so far :). Barcelona! At the rate I'm going and provided they don't sell out, I may be able to finish the book before CNY. Haha.

Want List - because it's Dilbert, you know. And what a title; there used to be a time when I bought books purely based on the title. Does that mean I judge a book by its cover?

A BIG Want List - Calvin & Hobbes Box Collection. My piggybank collection is not yet sufficient for this purchase. One day one day one day soon.

Want List - to complete my JC collection. Brilliant wit. I watch Top Gear to listen to him, not for the cars.

Currently reading this from Murakami. I had planned to reserve this as reading material for my next trip but curiosity got the better of me. Am reading it slowly so it'll last till then. I am enjoying this book very much and it looks like the 'beginning of a beautiful friendship' aka a new collection :)

So now you know, when brown selipar is taking a rest, the girl burrows into her books and reads away ...

Xmas Wishes

I wonder if it's too late to write to Santa.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays everyone!
